Because our law firm assists individuals and businesses in filing for bankruptcy relief under the Bankruptcy Code, our firm is defined as a debt relief agency. Our services include assisting individuals and businesses find ways to avoid filing bankruptcy, but includes advice that may involve filing for bankruptcy relief under Title 11 of the United States Code.
The term "debt relief agencies" as defined by Congress also includes individuals and companies that are not attorneys or law firms, but which prepare bankruptcy petitions or advertise other debt relief services. Do not confuse every entity that describes itself as an "debt relief agency" as a law firm with attorneys certified as specialists to provide bankruptcy services. In the event you are contacted by a debt relief agency advertising services to provide a debt repayment plan, to assist with mortgage foreclosure, to assist with eviction proceedings, to assist in eliminating calls from debt collectors and collection agencies, or to provide any other assistance based upon your inability to pay your debts, be sure to ask them whether or not they can advise you on both your bankruptcy and non-bankruptcy alternatives. Also ask whether they are certified by the American Board of Certification as a bankruptcy law specialists to provide the services they are offering.
